Karnatak University Dharwad was established in the year 1950 with jurisdiction of the University covers Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri and Uttar Kannada districts. Karnatak university which sprawls over 888 acres and offers courses in the faculties of Arts, Commerce, Education, Law, Management, Science and Technology and Social Sciences. It has several Post Graduate centres. The university has 47 PG departments, 224 teachers and 4500 students including PG Diploma, M.Phil and Ph.D. Courses. 6% of the students are from outside the State. The Karnatak University Dharwad has 3 PG campuses, at Haveri, Gadag and Karwar all of which are district headquarters. There are 5 constituent colleges offering UG and PG courses in science, arts, commerce, fine arts, law and education. The University offers overall development of students of this back ward region of north Karnataka. The University has introduced Computer Applications, Environ mental problems and Human Rights, Indian Constitution and Development of Communication Skills to help students in the area. All the class rooms are equipped with modern teaching and learning aids including audio-visuals, slides, OHP and LCD projectors. There are 21 hostels which provides residential accommodation to 2600 students of UG and PG courses. The number of affiliated colleges has increased from 34 to more than 250. All campus are self-contained and are at various stages of development. They cater to the needs of local people as well as promote specialized studies. To eliminate social exclusion and promote social justice, seats are reserved for Minorities, in accordance with the policy of the State Government. One seat is reserved for the children of ex-servicemen, physically challenged, freedom fighters, and sportsmen. The University has its own High School (University Public School) since 1964. The University attracts students from various countries like UAE, Nigeria, South Africa, Bangladesh, and Iran which offers admission under NRI quota. The Department of Foreign Languages offers courses in Russian, German and French languages. A Student Advisor is nominated to cater to the needs and problems of the foreign students. Students with fewer score can get direct admission through management quota.
